The Master Arborist Awards and below list is about promoting the Top Rated Tree Service in Sacramento, CA and taking the guesswork out of hiring.
We want you the customer to easily find the 10 local tree services most likely to give a great service at reasonable prices.
There are a few ways we could have compiled this list.
Instead of taking the traditional route of getting residents to vote (which is usually just friends of the business owner voting), we decided to use all online customer reviews and use those along with other metrics to calculate the 2020 winner.
Years of experience, number of reviews and average score.
Taking a mathematical approach (see the formula used below results) we gave each local tree service a score.
Other minimum criteria to qualify include:
20 reviews
5 years in business
2 sources of customer reviews.
(E.g. Google review and Yelp, but most have 3 – 4 sources.)
Below we go into more detail about the selection process, the formula used and the reasoning behind it to find this year’s winners.
And the winners are…

To qualify to make the list, you needed to have a minimum of 20 reviews total across a minimum of 2 different platforms. This can be Google, Facebook, Yelp, Yellow Pages, Angie’s List, Home advisor or any other 3rd party review platform. Curated reviews taken on personal websites were not counted.
The company needed to be in business for a minimum of 5 years.
We feel that years in operation is a big factor as it speaks volumes about the competence of the business as a whole. A lot of the business on the list have been in business for 10 years or more.
The GoTreeQuotes rating is a mathematical formula which takes into account the number for year in business, the number of reviews, as well as the average score.
We believe the provenance of a company and the number of reviews, is just as important as the average score. Just as long as that average score does not dip too much below the 4.0 mark.
The formula used:
Years in business X number of reviews / 1000 X Average score = GTQ rating
Example:
17 x 247/ 1000 x 4.95 = 208
Taking into account all three performance indicators of a business gives us a pretty accurate look at the overall satisfaction of customers while the tree service has been operating.
We found this to be the fairest and most precise way to do things.
Below are some more details on the companies in order as they appear on the list above.
You can call the City of Sacramento customer service hotline on 311. Just explain the issue with the tree and where it is located and the operator will dispatch a city arborist to inspect the tree.
If their tree is fallen over a road or power lines or is endangering lives in any way, call Emergency Management Services on 916-808-1740. These types of emergency jobs do need to be taken care of immediately so regular bureaucracy needs to be skipped to make the tree and public as safe as possible in a short amount of time.
Unfortunately, the city will only remove or prune trees on public land. All trees on your property need to be maintained by the owner. If you are renting you will need to speak with your landlord first about a problem tree.
Even though the city can tell you whether you can remove a tree or not they will not pay for it. Trees are actually considered to be owned by the community as the whole community benefits from their presence.
Yes and no. Let me explain. You cannot just call up and request an arborist to come out and inspect your tree just because you would like to know the tree’s health. This is something you would need to have done by a private arborist at your own expense.
If the arborist has inspected the tree and you decide you would like to remove it, you will need to apply for a permit (if the tree is considered protected. See below parameters for “privately protected trees”).
Once the application has been filed a city arborist will then come out and inspect the tree and give you the thumbs up or thumbs down for removal.
In some cases, they may ask for supporting evidence before they give the ok for removal.
For example, if you are citing the tree’s poor health and danger to the public for your reason for removal, the city arborist might ask that you procure an arborist report from a private arborist to corroborate these claims.
You can if the tree is not protected. How do you tell if your tree is protected? You need to check Sacramento’s Tree Permits and Ordinance rules for removal. See a summary here:
You will need a permit if:
The tree is on city property
The tree is “Privately protected”. See below for the definition.
The tree is “heritage listed”
Privately protected trees are:
* DSH = Diameter Standard Height. Learn how to measure a trees’ DBH
Native Oak trees
Native oak trees in Sacramento will require a permit no matter the size due to their protected status. See this information on how to identify an Oak tree.

Once filled in you can email the application to urbanforestry@cityofsacramento.org. You may be required to provide supporting evidence for your application such as an arborist report, tree protection plan, tree replacement plan and other information deemed necessary. Most of the time this is required for the Development application. For residential use, just submit your application and the city will advise if more information is required.
How do I choose a tree service in Sacramento for my job?
The best place to start is this page. We have devised a formula for listing the very best tree services in each city by taking previous customers’ votes, the average score, the number of votes, the number of platforms being voted on and the number of years in business. Each one of these factors weighs in on the overall GTQ score assigned to the company.
With the companies listed here, you can literally take a stab in the dark and will get a good deal at a great price, but I also suggest a few other checks on each company before engaging their services.
The city also gives a list of a certified arborist that it recommends. I think it is important to share this information with people seeking arborist reports.

The city has also provided residents with a list of certified tree trimmers they consider legitimate because they are members of the International Society of Arboriculture.
It is worth mentioning at this point that just because they are members of the ISA and the city lists them, does not mean they have great online reviews or that they will give you a great price.
If you are after the top voted local tree trimmers, I do suggest you refer to the list provided at the top of the page.
Sacramento’s Urban Forest refers to all trees and vegetation within the urban area. About 20% of all trees are on public land and the rest are on private properties.
It is in the best interest of all residents that the whole picture of Sacramento’s canopy cover is monitored to ensure the whole city benefits from them.
